Sure enough, when you reach the dining area, dinner is starting to get served.  Students are lining up around the buffet tables at the back.  The lines move relatively quickly, so it isn’t long before you are helping yourself to the food.  You sit down at the table with your other friends and everyone talks excitedly about what they’ve been up to.

You are surprised to find out that the rumors about Hiro beating the simulation are already flying about.  Once Hiro discovers how big of a deal it seems to be to everyone, he quickly morphs into bragging mode, and you can only roll your eyes at him.

“I’m going to fill up my cup again, do you want anything?” you ask as you stand up.

Hiro glances up at you and smiles but shakes his head, before turning back to your friends to continue recounting his tale of how he beat the simulation.

Grabbing your empty cup, you walk over to the drink area and go to the tub that’s just filled with water.  You hold your cup underneath the spout and turn the dial to let the water flow.

“Hey, sweet cheeks.  You’re lookin’ mighty fine in that dress.  But I’d bet it would look even better on my bedroom floor.”

You raise an eyebrow when you look up at the person talking to you.  You roll your eyes when you see a tall jock looking down at you with leering eyes.  “Go away, Gareth.  I have a boyfriend.”  You turn back to your water cup, but freeze when you feel his body press against your back, as his arms box you in against the table.

“Ah yes, the ever elusive boyfriend.  You know, I’ve never seen you around with this so called boyfriend.  I’m starting to think that it’s just an excuse you use to try to keep guys away from you.”  He chuckles darkly in your ear.  “Well, I’m on to you darling, and I’m not going to let you slip passed my fingers anymore.”

Setting your cup down, you shudder as the blood in your veins turn to ice.  “Leave me alone, Gareth.  Even if I was lying about having a boyfriend, which I’m not, I still wouldn’t want to be with you,” you tell him in a voice that sounds braver than you really feel.  You manage to slip underneath his arm and try to walk away.  You don’t get very far, before his large hand grasps tightly around your wrist.  You gasp when he yanks you back toward him.

“I am not letting you walk away from me again!” he growls down at you.

“Hey!”  You feel relief consume you when you recognize Hiro’s voice.  “Get your grubby hands off my girlfriend.”  You look over your shoulder to see Hiro standing just a few feet away from you.  He’s pulled himself up to his full height, his muscles tense as he looks primed and ready for anything.  His gaze is narrowed into an angry glare at Gareth.

Gareth looks over and sneers, “Who the hell are you?”

“The ever elusive boyfriend.  Now let. Her. Go.”  He orders with a no nonsense tone.

Gareth scoffs and tosses you off to the side to get up in Hiro’s face.  “And what gives you the right to think that you can talk to me like that?”

Hiro stands his ground and maintains eye contact, not even blinking.  “Maybe the fact that it’s a free country, or the fact that I’m my own person, so I can think whatever I want.  Or maybe it’s the fact that my IQ is five times bigger than yours, and that’s with over estimating your intelligence.  Or it could possibly just be the fact that I can drop kick you across this room no sweat.”

“Hiro, come on.  He’s not even worth it,” you cut in, trying to stop the impending fight you know is going to break out.

Gareth breaks out into a snicker, “Hero?  Is that your name?  What, do you go around rescuing damsels every day, or something?”

Hiro’s glare narrows even further, “Maybe I wouldn’t have to if scum like you didn’t walk this earth.”

Gareth glares and growls, “Why I oughta-”

“Do it.  I dare you,” Hiro taunts.

You gasp when Gareth swings his fist around, aiming for Hiro’s head.  Faster than you can blink, Hiro has grasped Gareth’s arm, swung it around behind Gareth’s back and slammed him face first onto the table top.  Hiro hold’s Gareth’s arm at an uncomfortable angle behind his back, forcing him to stay pinned to the table.

“What the hell, man?!” Gareth cries in pain and in shock.

“I know four different forms of martial arts.  I can bench press two times your weight.  I work out and train every day, just so I can make sure scum like you end up in places they deserve to be.  You do not want to mess with me,” Hiro tells him in a dark voice.  “When I let you go, you are going to grab whatever you brought with you to this thing and you are going to leave.  You are going to do so without causing a scene.  If I ever find out that you’ve harassed my girlfriend again, I am going to come after you and finish what I’ve started.  And believe me when I tell you that there is no place you can hide in all of San Fransokyo that I can’t find you.”  Hiro releases Gareth and takes a step back.

Gareth stays slumped against the table for a moment, still in too much pain to move.  One of the teachers, who really should have stepped in earlier, comes forward and lifts Gareth off the table.  “Alright, Mr. Bernstein.  You were warned to be on your best behavior tonight.  I’m afraid you’re going to have to leave now.”  You and Hiro watch the teacher walk Gareth over to the main lobby.

It’s not until the doors have safely closed behind them that Hiro turns to you.  “Are you okay?” he asks in concern, all traces of his anger from earlier completely vanishing.

You stare at him in shock before glancing down at the table where Gareth had been laying.  “You just dropped him in like two seconds flat,” you say, still in a daze as to what just happened.

He looks down at the floor in shame, “I scared you, didn’t I?  I’m so sorry, (Name).  I swear I was only trying to protect you, I-”

You cut him off when your fingers curl around his tie and you yank his head down closer to yours.  He looks at you in surprise as you gaze deeply into his gorgeous brown depths.  “I am so attracted to you, right now,” you tell him honestly.

“Wait, what?” he looks at you confused.

With another tug on his tie, you pull him close enough to kiss him.  Letting go of his tie, you wrap one hand against the back of his neck, while the other traces the edge of his jaw.  The kiss you share is a little more fiery than normal as you both feed off the adrenaline that still runs through your systems from earlier.  The only reason you pull out of the kiss is so you can catch your breath.

“Not that I’m complaining, because I’m not, but why were we just making out?” Hiro asks in a breathless voice.

“Don’t get me wrong; watching you in that simulation thing was pretty hot, but… I don’t know… Seeing you take down Gareth, in a real life setting… It was just so sexy and satisfying.  And the fact that you did it to defend me and my honor?  Well, that just makes me want to drag you to a dark corner and make out for the rest of the night,” you tell him.

“Oh,” he gapes down at you, not sure if he heard you correctly.  “Well, that sounds like a pretty good idea to me.  Let’s do that.”

You grin deviously up at him and grab his hand, “Okay.”

His eyes sparkle mischievously as he matches your grin.  “I think I have an idea of where we can go.”  He leads the way, passing by your dinner table, where he grabs his blazer, before he detours and takes you up the stairs.

On the second floor, he walks you down the main hall and over to the back corner.  You frown when you notice where the two of you are headed.  “Hiro, I’m not making out with you in the bathroom.”

He laughs and glances at you over his shoulder, but keeps walking forward.  “Have a little faith, (Name).”  Instead of moving to the doors on the right that leads to the bathroom, Hiro opens the unmarked door on the left.

You step through, not sure what to expect and nearly jump out of your skin when you are hit by a wall of cold air.  You take in a deep breath, when you realize that you are outside.  It’s night time, so the sky is dark, but the full moon is out, which provides some light, not to mention the entire San Fransokyo skyline is glowing in full view in front of you.  You gasp in awe at the beauty before your eyes.  “Wow,” you let out in a hushed whisper.  You walk out to the edge of the balcony and grasp the railing, unable to take your eyes of the magnificent view.

“Pretty amazing, huh?” Hiro asks, standing next to you.

“How did you know this was here?” you ask.

“I remember playing hide and seek here once with Tadashi and I hid out here.  The door got jammed, so I was locked out here for a while, until one of the museum workers came out for a smoke break.  Aunt Cass was so mad, because I had been gone for a good two hours.  She grounded me for a month and forbade me from eating gummy bears.”

You laugh, “Oh the horror.”

“Those were some pretty dark days,” he tells you seriously.  He can only keep a straight face for so long before he joins in your laughter.

You shiver when a particularly cold breeze blows passed.  Hiro is quick to put his blazer around your shoulders and you give him a grateful smile.  You lean your head against his shoulder as you return your gaze to the city lights.

“(Name)?” Hiro asks after a moment of silence.

“Hm?” you respond in a dazed voice.  When he doesn’t continue to say anything, you lift your head off his shoulder and look up at him.  He’s looking back at you with half lidded eyes and a tender smile on his lips.  “What is it?” you ask.

“I’m in love with you,” he tells you.

Your heart skips a beat as his words replay in your mind.  Of course, you already knew that he was.  Both of you had been in love with each other for a while now, but there had never really been a necessity to say it.  Hiro was the type of person to express through actions rather than words, so to hear him admit it out loud was a very big step.

When the shock of his words melts away, you can’t help but grin and pull him in for another kiss.  This one is sweet and slow as you prove just how much you love each other.  When you pull back, you wrap your arms around his torso and bury your face into his chest.

“So, is there something you would like to tell me in return?” Hiro asks almost hesitantly.

You laugh and lift your head up to meet his gaze once more.  “I love you so much, Hiro Hamada.”

He grins back at you, but you can see the relief in his eyes.  “You had me going there for a moment when you didn’t say anything back.”

You raise an eyebrow, “I kissed you didn’t I?”

“Well, I don’t know!  You could have just been doing that as a distraction until you could plan your escape attempt.”

You laugh and shake your head.  “You might be a genius, but apparently some things that are quite obviously staring you right in the face can still fly straight over your head.  Rest assured Hiro, I am very much in love with you, too.”  You tell him, before closing your eyes and resting your cheek back against his chest.

His arms pull you in close as he leans down to kiss the top of your head.  You are both content to just stand there for a moment, just holding onto each other.  You open your eyes when you suddenly hear the soft sound of a violin.  You catch a glimpse of Hiro putting his cell phone back into the pocket of his pants and you realize that is where the music is now coming from.

You give him a curious look when he grabs onto your hand and pulls you to the middle of the balcony.  “Can I have this dance?” he asks, already lifting up your joined hands and placing his other hand at your waist.

You raise an eyebrow, but move to place your hand on his shoulder anyways.  “You hate dancing,” you tell him, surprised when he begins to sway to the music.

He grins down at you, “I think I can make an exception for tonight.  It is your senior ball after all.”

You give him a matching grin, “Look at you, dancing and rhyming.  And you even put classical music on your phone, when I know you only like listening to techno and electronic.  When did you become so romantic?”

He exhales in a short laugh.  He steps back and lifts your joined hands, so you can complete a small twirl.  When he pulls you back in, he does it in a way that makes you end up with your back to his chest.  “I just want to make sure that your night tonight is perfect,” he whispers into your ear.

You close your eyes and lean you head back against his shoulder as you both continue to sway to the music.  “The only thing I needed to make this night perfect was you by my side.”

You can feel him smile against your skin when he leans down to kiss your neck.  “Then I guess it’s a good thing that I’m not going anywhere.”

If I was forbidden from eating gummy bears, I would literally cry and/or die!!
