You huff and puff dramatically as you follow Hiro down the hallway and into his new lab space, carrying a very heavy cardboard box.  Letting out a long breath of relief, you set the box down on the floor.  “Seriously, Hiro.  What did you put in this box?”  You use your forearm to wipe some of the sweat off your brow.

“I offered to help you with it.  You’re the one that said no,” he responds setting down his own box.

You stick your tongue out at him.  “Okay, there are only a few more boxes down in Aunt Cass’s truck.  I’ll go get them and you can start unpacking.”  You begin to head for the door way.

“Are you sure?” Hiro asks.

“Yeah, I’ve got it,” you throw over your shoulder just before you step out into the hallway.

You take the elevator down to the first floor then walk out to the front where Aunt Cass is parked.  Because it’s only a temporary parking area, she isn’t allowed to leave her car unattended, which is why you and Hiro were the ones moving everything.

You grab the last few boxes, and they’re light enough to just stack on top of each other and carry all at once.  Balancing them with one arm, you use your free hand to close the tailgate to her truck.  “I think that’s the last of it,” you tell her through the passenger window.

“Alright.  I need to head back to the café, will you and Hiro be okay here?”

You nod at her with a smile.  “Yeah, we’ll be fine.  I’m not sure how long unpacking is going to take.  I’ll make sure Hiro calls you to check in if we’re still here in a few hours.

“Okay.  Thank you for coming with us to help him unload all his junk,” she tells you with a smile.

You laugh, “It’s no problem, really.  See you later.”  You turn to head back into the building as she takes off in the truck.  You make your way back up to the second floor and get to Hiro’s lab.  “So, how’s that unpacking coming along?” you ask as you set down the boxes.

“(Name)… It’s here,” Hiro states, sounding in awe.

You look over at him in confusion.  He’s standing by the small bookshelf at the back of the room, next to Baymax’s armored fist.  “What’s here?” you ask for clarification as you walk over to him.

He turns and holds out his hand, and in it, you can see a very familiar, green item.

You gasp, a hand flying to your mouth.  “Baymax’s healthcare chip!  But how?”  You look up at Hiro, who seems to be in just as much shock as you are.

“I don’t know!  He must have slipped it out when I wasn’t looking!  (Name), do you know what this means?!”  He looks at you in excitement.  “This chip is what makes Baymax, Baymax!  Everything will go by so much faster!  All his programming is right here!  I just need Tadashi’s specs on how to build him!  I can get him back in a week, tops!”

You wrap your arms around his neck, grinning like a maniac.  “This is amazing!  I’m so happy for you, Hiro!  Baymax said that he’d always be with you.  I think this is what he meant.  He knew you would need this to rebuild him.”

Hiro is grinning just as widely as you are, “Well, what are we waiting for?  Let’s get to work!”

You both leap into action.  Hiro boots up the desktop computer and logs in using Tadashi’s old username, so we can have access to his files.  You begin to rummage through boxes, trying to find anything you might need.

You both work pretty late into the night.  Hiro is the only one that can machine parts, because he’s actually a student at SFIT, but you help out by soldering Baymax’s circuit boards.  When the week starts up, you have to go back to attending your high school classes, but you come in after school is over to check on Hiro.  He makes an amazing amount of progress in just a few shorts days, and sure enough, by the end of the week, you walk into his lab after having dinner with your family, to find Hiro and Baymax hugging each other.

You smile and hang back, letting the two of them have their moment.

“I missed you,” Hiro mumbles, letting out a short sniffle as he pulls back to look up at Baymax.

“It is good to be back,” Baymax responds.

You step further into the room, the sound of your footsteps catching their attention.

“(Name)!” Hiro says in shock, quickly trying to wipe away the few tears he had in his eyes.

“Hey,” you respond.  “Looks like you finished him.”  You look up at Baymax and smile in greeting, “Long time, no see, Baymax.”

The large robot turns his body around to face you.  “(Name), I never got to apologize for my actions toward you at Akuma Island.  Please forgive me, I regret any distress or injury I may have caused you,” he bows respectfully as he apologizes.

You stare up at him in shock, having mostly forgotten about that.  It seems like it’s been years since that happened, even though it’s only been a little over a week.  “It’s okay, Baymax.  I’m fine.  It’s just water under the bridge.”

Baymax’s head tilts to the side and he blinks, “I fear, I do not understand what you mean.  Are you talking about the Golden Gate Bridge?”

You and Hiro both share a laugh at his confusion.  “It’s just another expression, Bud,” Hiro explains.

“Yeah, it basically just means that whatever happened in the past can’t be undone, so it must be accepted and forgiven in order for you to just move on with your life,” you tell him.

“I believe that I understand now.”

“I think one of your upgrades should include a list of idioms and expressions,” Hiro states with a joke, making you laugh.

A few weeks later, you get woken up from a dead sleep when your cell phone goes off.  You groan in protest and roll over, noticing that your legs are all tangled up in your sheets.  You reach a hand out to your bedside table and slap it across the surface a few times until you find your phone.

You grab it, swipe to answer the call and place it next to your ear.  “Hello?” you ask in a low mumble.

“(Name)…”

“Hiro?”  You let out a soft groan and rub your tired eyes, “What time is it?”

“It’s uh… 3:15.  (Name), I’m so sorry for waking you up, I just…” he cuts himself off and lets out a shaky breath.

You sit up, becoming more alert when you note the clear distress in his voice.  “Hiro, what’s wrong?”  He doesn’t respond to you for a few seconds, all you can hear is his harsh breathing.  “Hiro?” you try again.

“Can you come over?” he suddenly asks in a rush.

You blink in surprise, not expecting him to ask you that.  “Uh… sure,” you respond and start to untangle yourself from your sheets.

“(Name), I’m sorry.  I know it’s late.  You don’t actually have to come if you don’t want to,” you frown at his strange behavior.

“Hiro, you asked me to come over, I said yes, I’m coming over.  I don’t know what’s going on right now, but you sound like you don’t want to be alone.  I’m your friend, Hiro.  I don’t mind doing this.  You’ve had me do crazier things anyways.  I’ll be there in like five minutes.”

He lets out a long breath, “Okay, thank you.  I’m sorry for disturbing you.”

“Stop apologizing, Hiro.  It’s okay, honestly.  I’ll see you soon.”

“Alright,” he responds before you hang up.

You grab your jacket and put on some shoes, quietly making your way outside, so you don’t disturb your parents.  You take your bike to get to Hiro’s house, since it’s faster.  You get there in just under the five minutes that you promised.  Hiro already has the front door open as he waits for you.  He looks a little distraught as you make your way to him.  You quickly throw your arms around him, holding him close, because it looks like he really needs it.

He snakes his arms around you and buries his face into your neck.  You smooth your hands over his messy hair and rub his back in comfort.  “What’s going on?  Is everything okay?” you ask softly.

His grip tightens around you for a moment before he let’s go.  “Come on in, we can talk upstairs.”

You follow him up until you reach his bedroom.  He slumps into his desk chair, rubbing his tired eyes with one hand.  You settle yourself onto the edge of his bed.  He doesn’t say anything for a while and he won’t look at you.  “Hiro, you’re kind of freaking me out.  What’s wrong?” you ask.

“I’ve been having nightmares,” he finally admits in a quiet voice.

You frown and furrow your brow in worry.  “For how long?”

He glances at you for a second before looking away again.  “Since the battle at Krei Tech…”

Your eyes widen in shock, “Hiro, that was weeks ago!  Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because!” he huffs, spinning in his chair to turn away from you.  “I thought I could handle it by myself.  I’m 14 years old!  I shouldn’t be having nightmares, that’s for little kids who are scared of the dark!”

“Hiro, you’ve gone through a lot of traumatic events in such a short period of time.  It’s okay to be affected by it.  In fact, it’s normal.  What isn’t normal is to keep it bottled up inside and to keep it from your friends.  We’re here to help you.”

“I know, I just…” his voice cuts off in a sigh as he runs a frustrated hand through his hair.  “It’s been the same dream, mostly.  I’m back in the portal and I have to leave Baymax behind.  Sometimes it’s Tadashi instead… but tonight was different.  It was you.”

Your heart skips a beat.

“You were crying, begging me to let go of your hand so that I could get back to the other side.  I wouldn’t- I couldn’t let go of you, but the gravitational pull of the portal was trying to suck me in.  Something else was trying to pull you back, and your hand suddenly got ripped out of mine.  I screamed your name, but soon you disappeared as I got pushed out the other side of the portal and it closed behind me.”

Your heart is pounding as you listen to him talk.

“That’s why I called you.  I needed to know that you were alright.  I thought hearing your voice would be enough.  I didn’t mean to wake you up, I just wanted to listen to your voicemail, but then you answered and I couldn’t stop myself from asking you to come over.  I needed to physically see you, to touch you.  (Name), I was so scared that you were gone-”

“Hey,” you say in a soothing voice.  You push off the bed and turn his chair around so you can crawl into his lap.  “I’m right here,” you tell him.  His arms curl around your waist as he buries his face into your neck.  He takes in deep breaths of your familiar scent.  The longer he holds onto you, the more he calms down.

“Can you stay here, tonight?  I know you have class in the morning, but I don’t want to be alone,” he asks, looking up at you.

“Of course I can.  I wouldn’t leave even if you didn’t want me here,” you tell him, giving him a lopsided smile.

His lip curls up ever so slightly, “Thank you.”

You nod your head toward the bed, “Come on.  I think we both are in desperate need for a good night’s rest.”  You climb out of his lap and tug on his hand to get him to follow you to the bed.

You slip under the covers and curl up around each other.  You have your head on Hiro’s shoulder and he has an arm curled underneath you so he can keep you close.  You close your eyes but can’t really fall asleep, especially when Hiro starts to draw random patterns with his fingers on your back.

“(Name)?” Hiro asks in a hushed voice, wondering if you’ve already fallen asleep.

“Yeah,” you respond.

“Do you remember how we met?”

You smile at the memory and give a short laugh, “At robo-camp, over summer?”

Hiro smiles too as he stares up at the ceiling.  “Yeah.  Those were some good times, weren’t they?”

“The two misfits of the camp joining forces.  The young genius who was building stuff far too advanced for the other kids, and then the only girl in the entire camp.”

“We made quite the pair.”

You laugh and snuggle a little closer to him, “We still do.”

Hiro stays quiet after that.  You feel your eyes droop and your head becomes cloudy as you drift off to sleep.  “(Name)?” Hiro asks again, but this time he doesn’t get a response.  He’s quiet for another moment before confessing, “I think I’m in love with you.”  He’s both disappointed and relieved when you don’t reply.

------2 years later------

“So, I have something to tell you.  Please don’t get mad, okay?” you say hesitantly.  You’re sitting at the end of Hiro’s desk in his lab.  You came over to hang out after your classes finished, but he had a lot of work to still do on his current project, so you were both just staying there.

He pauses his movements and looks up at you, “From past experience, conversations that start out like that, never end well…”

You sigh, your shoulders slumping forward, “I know, just hear me out, okay?”  He stays silent, waiting expectantly for you to continue.  “I got into an internship at Krei Tech,” you finally admit.

Hiro frowns, “You what?  Why?”  Before you can respond, he begins his rant.  “Why would you even apply in the first place?  (Name), did you forget what happened two years ago?”

You let out a frustrated huff and jump off the table, “See?  This is why I didn’t want to tell you.  I knew you’d explode in my face.”

“And for good reason!  That place is dangerous!  It’s practically a miracle that the company was able to bounce back at all.  (Name) do you realize the things Alistair Krei probably did in order to keep his company on top after all that stuff happened?  He cuts corners and will do just about anything to get what he wants.  Do you really want to work for a person like him?”

“It’s not like I’m working directly for him!  It’s an internship Hiro, I probably won’t even see him!”  You let out a long breath, trying to calm down, “Look, it’s an amazing opportunity.  Despite what happened two years ago, Krei Tech is still the number one technical corporation in the country.  If I do this internship, it solidifies my chances of getting in here at SFIT when I apply next fall.”

Hiro’s shoulders are still tense, he’s not willing to back down, “Why do you need this internship?  I know you’ll already get in.”

You shake your head at him, “You can’t guarantee that.  Sure, my grades are above average, and I have some technical experience, but Hiro, I’m not like you.  The way I see it, I have about a 50/50 shot of getting in.  When you compare me to all the other students that will be applying, I’m not that special.  If I do this internship, it’ll boost my chances.  I need this.”

Hiro crosses his arms and won’t look at you.

Your shoulders drop, “Hiro, please don’t be mad at me…”  Your throat tightens in emotion.  You always hate it when you and Hiro fight.

He picks up pretty quickly on the weak tone in your voice and looks up at you.  With a sigh, he pushes himself out of his chair and pulls you into a hug, “I’m not mad.  I’m just worried.”

“I’ll be fine, I promise.  It’s just for 4 months, anyways.  I’ll be done before you know it.”

He gives you a flat look, “4 months is a pretty long time.”

You roll your eyes at him, “Well, fine, then just look at it this way, if we ever need to do any reconnaissance missions in Krei Tech, I’ll already have an in.  No one would suspect the innocent little 16 year old girl.”

“They will if they catch you in a place you aren’t supposed to be in.”

You laugh and feel relief when you see Hiro crack a small smile.  “So… are we okay now?” you ask hopefully.

He nods, “Yeah.  We’re okay.  Just be careful, alright?” he asks leaning down to kiss your cheek.

You smile up at your best friend when he pulls back, “I will be.  Thank you for understanding.”

He sighs and goes back to his desk chair.  “Yeah yeah.”
Laughing lightly, you move back to your previous position, sitting on the edge of the table.  You’re glad that the tense atmosphere from before has dissipated, but you also feel anticipation for whatever this internship could possibly hold.
